Feeding Guideline

Wombaroo Insectivore Rearing Mix can be used as a supplement to boost protein, vitamins & minerals in meat, fish & egg diets. The product can also be mixed with water to make soft pellets or liquid slurry for hand-rearing or assist feeding. Suggested feeding guidelines are presented below. Do not add vitamin, mineral or concentrated food supplements to these diets as this may seriously alter the balance of nutrients. Prepare food fresh daily.

How to Feed

To feed as Meat Mix

Mix 10g (2 teaspoons) of Insectivore Rearing Mix per 20g of minced meat or fish.

A little moisture may be necessary to moisten the preparation. Always use good quality meat as a base.

This is a versatile and nutritionally balanced mix that can be used to supplement magpies, ravens, tawny frogmouths, raptors & seabirds. Do not add any other supplements.

To feed with Hard-boiled Egg

Mix 20g (2 tablespoons) with 1 mashed Hard-boiled egg (50g).

Mash the egg with a fork and then slowly add the Insectivore Rearing Mix and gently turn into a crumbly mass.

This is an ideal supplement for softbills such as wrens, robins and chats as well as waterbirds including plovers, rails and waders. Mix with live food such as mealworms, termites or fly pupae to encourage intake. Many canary, finch and parrot breeders also offer this soft food mix to their nesting birds.

To feed as pellets

Mix 10g (2 heaped teaspoons) of Insectivore Rearing Mix with 6mL of warm water.

Slowly add the water and mix to a putty-like consistency. Break small pieces from the prepared mix and roll into pellets for feeding, using tweezers. This mix is essentially a ‘dry’ food so birds should be offered water by mouth when feeding pellets.

Use pellets to feed orphaned or sick birds including magpies, ravens, kookaburras and tawny frogmouths.

To feed as a liquid slurry

Add 10g (2 heaped teaspoons) of Insectivore Rearing Mix with 15mL of warm water.

Slowly add water and mix to make a slurry of the required consistency. Let the mix stand for 2 minutes to absorb all the water. If too thick, add a little more water and continue mixing. Feed using a spoon or syringe and tube. The mix should be fluid enough to pass through the syringe hub when tube feeding. The mixture should be fed at about 30ºC.

Use as an “assist feeding” formula for sick and orphaned birds. Particularly young altricial chicks, or older birds that are unable to feed themselves.

To feed Raptors & Seabirds (whole-body eaters)

Stuff 5g (1 teaspoon) of Insectivore Rearing Mix per 20g of whole fish, mice or day old chicks fed. Cavities may be stuffed using a syringe.
